# ATP Synthase --- **ATP synthase** is the spinning [[protein]] complex that churns out [[adenosine triphosphate|ATPs]] in the [[ETC (mitochondria)|ETC]]. It has a channel for [[membrane transport|transporting]] protons, and the spinning wheel bit for smushing the ATP together. [[Mitochondria]] have massive amounts of ATP synthase associated with their inner membrane. [[Gram negative bacteria]] have ATP synthase associated with their inner membrane as well (although maybe not as many?). ATP synthase is a protein complex, with one subuint associated with the membrane and the other that spins freely to generate the [[adenosine triphosphate]]. It is a molecular rotary motor. Because of the strong [[proton motive force|proton gradient]] on the outside of the membrane, it fucking *churns* out ATP. ![[atp synthase.png]] ___
